History of Florida’s Gulfarium

Florida’s Gulfarium opened in 1955 and is the oldest continuously operated marine show aquarium in the world!

It was the desire to share those wonders with others that prompted Brandy Siebenaler, a marine research scientist, to open Florida’s Gulfarium in 1955. Siebenaler was a pioneering researcher, discovering new life forms in the Gulf of Mexico and remaining on the cutting-edge of marine mammal science. He was never one for the spotlight, instead keeping the focus on the sea and it’s wonders. Siebenaler’s advanced work in marine science has ever been underappreciated and little noticed.

The Florida Aquarium delivers the beauty of ocean animals with interactive and immersion galleries diving deep into the world of Florida’s natural habitat and other ecosystems. From the Wetland’s iconic spiral dome enclosure where free flying birds soar and playful otter frolic to the deep coral reef environment within a 500,000 gallon tank, animal interactions and information go wild in the heart of Tampa Bay. Children love unique features like the stingray feeding, the penguin promenade, and the huge outdoor water play area.

The parks theme tells the story of waters journey to the sea: from a single drop of rain to the deep waters where the oceans top predators are found. Along the way, see river otters, alligators, stingrays, and sharks! In addition, you will experience our 500,000 gallon floor-to-ceiling Coral Reef tank and exit through Ocean Commotion. You can also meet a penguin face-to-beak or watch the children splash the day away in our outdoor water fun zone: Explore A Shore, while you sip a tropical beverage relaxing on the Caribbean Cantina deck!
